WS-19: Vehicular Communications based on 5G

This workshop focuses on 5G based vehicular communications and is expected to cover the latest progress and results from both academic and industrial researchers.

Vehicular communication is one of the key technologies in intelligent transportation system (ITS) to provide wireless connectivity among vehicles, road sides’ devices, passengers, and pedestrians. Diverse applications present different QoS requirements for communications and networking. Various wireless access technologies (e.g. traditional Wi-Fi, IEEE 802.11p, cellular systems, and infrared communications) can be used to provide the radio interface required by vehicular networks, operating in different frequency bands and providing disparate features in communication range, data rate, channel bandwidth, and mobility supporting capability.

5G is a hot research area in recent years, aiming to address the demands and business contexts of 2020 and beyond. In 5G research, high mobility has been identified as one of the most important scenarios. In order to improve the user experience in high mobility scenario, low delay and high reliability are chosen as the key performance indicators for it. Such research greatly meets the requirements in vehicular communications. Compared with other wireless access technologies, 5G based vehicular communication has become a competitive one because of high capacity, high mobility support, ubiquitous coverage, high reliability, guaranteed delay and good inter-operate ability with commercial operators. Therefore, 5G based vehicular communication has attracted great attentions from both academic and industrial researchers.

In industrial field, many standardization organizations have conducted researches on vehicular communications based on LTE or 5G. In 3GPP, the most important standardization organization of cellular systems, the requirements and use cases, the architecture enhancements, initial standard supporting V2V services based on LTE has been studied, and evolved to 5G based research recently.

Therefore, this workshop is proposed at this time for 5G based vehicular communications, aiming to bring together academic and industrial researchers in an effort to identify and discuss the major technical challenges and recent results related to vehicular communications based on 5G.
